Conservatory Heaters: Your Guide to Making the Right Choice

9 April 2024 Cariad Marketing

If you want to use your conservatory as part of your living space, then conservatory heaters are an important consideration. A conservatory will naturally be a cooler room when the sun isn’t shining because of the amount of glass that’s used in its construction. And obviously it will be a lot colder than the rest of the house over the winter months so you will need a permanent heating solution if you want to use your conservatory all year round.

Insulation is important

Even with the most efficient double glazing, your conservatory windows will still lose more heat than an uninsulated wall. So it’s important to draft-proof your conservatory as much as possible through the use of insulating blinds or lined curtains.

Where’s the best position for a conservatory heater?

Ideally, your heaters need to be placed beneath a window where the rising heat can provide a ‘curtain’ in front of the glass that helps keep out the cold. The windows are the main attraction in a conservatory because you want to enjoy the view. Therefore the heat source needs to be as discreet as possible so the view isn’t obscured by your radiator, leaving you with choices such as a floor standing radiator, trench heating, or underfloor heating.

Which conservatory heaters are the best?

If you’re looking for the best heater for your conservatory, here’s a closer look at the various ways in which you can heat your conservatory.

Radiators

If you’re building a conservatory to be a part of your everyday living space, you’ll probably want to use your central heating system. If it’s not possible to extend your existing heating system, an electric radiator will do the job just as well, giving you all the heat output of a standard radiator with the additional bonus of being able to control it separately. Many designer electric radiators have specifically designed counterparts that run on electricity so you don’t have to compromise on looks, and if you already have designer radiators in your home, you can continue the design theme in your conservatory. They are fully programmable and many have integrated smart technology which can help you keep an eye on your energy use and keep your energy bills down.

If you have enough vertical wall space, a mirror radiator would be a great addition as it will reflect the light making your conservatory brighter at the same time as keeping it warm. It can also be positioned to reflect the greenery in the garden, bringing the outside in. Otherwise, floor standing radiators can be very effective electric conservatory heaters. They stand low on the ground so they won’t block your view, but they will keep your conservatory nice and warm.

Trench heating

Trench heating is so called because it is literally a small trench that has been dug into the floor. Pipes are laid inside the trench and then heated either by water or electricity. Cold air from the atmosphere is drawn into the trench where it’s heated by the hot pipes before being released back into the room, sometimes assisted by a fan. By positioning the trench on the inside of the doors and windows, the rising heat provides a curtain of warm air which helps to eliminate draughts, cold spots and condensation, making it a great solution if you’re fitting bifold windows or large patio doors. By trapping the heat in the room, it provides an efficient heating solution and can help you save energy on other forms of heating. The trench can be covered with decorative grilles that are designed to let the heat into the room at the same time as protecting the trench and allowing people to walk over it safely.

Underfloor heating

By installing underfloor heating in your conservatory, you’ll solve the problem of where to place radiators and will make the most of your garden views. It has another advantage in that you are more likely to have porcelain tile or stone flooring in your conservatory, both of which are ideal materials to use with underfloor heating. Underfloor heating will take longer to warm up and cool down, but it is an energy efficient way of heating your conservatory.

Electric heaters

If you don’t use your conservatory on a regular basis, or think you may need an extra boost in the colder months, it’s worth considering a portable electric heater. They’re convenient to use and don’t need installing – you just plug them into the socket and turn them on. The downside is that they don’t look great and can be expensive to run. Some heaters, especially fan heaters, can be noisy. And without thermostatic controls, you could end up wasting energy heating the room unnecessarily.

Wood burner

A wood burner can add warmth as well as aesthetic appeal – it would definitely be a focal point of your conservatory. However, there are a number of disadvantages; if you live in a Smoke Control Area, you will not be permitted to use one; you will need to install a chimney to ensure the smoke is released outside; you will need adequate ventilation when using the fire which in a modern, well insulated house might require the addition of a mechanical ventilation system; and finally, they require a lot of upkeep and cleaning.
