Stay Productive All Year: Top Heating Solutions for Your Garden Office

1 July 2024 Cariad Marketing

Garden offices are a great idea if you have your own business, are self-employed or just like to work remotely. They provide you with a working area that’s completely separate from your living space, but doesn’t involve a long commute in rush hour traffic. And unlike using the spare room as an office, you can lock up your business premises behind you when you’ve finished for the day so your work life will have a minimal impact on your home life.

As an added bonus, garden offices will also give you a lovely view of the garden throughout the day to help inspire and motivate you, especially in the summer months. But if you’re planning to use it all year round, then you need to consider the best garden office heating solution.

There are a number of garden office heating options to consider which may depend on whether or not you already have a suitable building in your garden, or whether you’re still in the planning stages and intend to build it from scratch.

Here are the main ways of heating a garden office throughout the year so you stay warm enough to work productively even on the coldest winter days.

Trench heating

A garden office building with a large patio door or bifold doors is a spectacular thing. The glass will let lots of natural light into your office and in the summer you can open the doors and let the fresh air in, allowing you to smell the flowers and feel like you’re working outside, even though you’re not. But the problem with large windows is that when the sun’s not shining at other times of the year, you could feel a bit chilly.

This is where trench heating comes into its own. The trench is sunk into the floor by the glass, and a convection heater is placed into the trench. A decorative trench grille is laid over the trench, lying flush with the floor. Cold air is drawn into the trench where it is heated, released and rises and heats the room through natural convection.

The advantage of trench heating is that it provides a curtain of warm air, keeping the chill outside and the warmth inside. And on those in between days when you want to have the doors open but it’s still a little chilly outside, you can do both!

Central heating vs electric radiators

If your central heating system is efficient enough to reach your garden building and you have the budget to achieve this, you can heat it in the same way as the rest of the house. However, it is unlikely that you will be using the office at the same time as the rest of your home, so it would make better sense to have an electric radiator that can be controlled independently.

In terms of looks and heat efficiency, electric radiators are the same as radiators you plumb into the central heating system – indeed, some designer radiator models are available as both. The advantage of electric radiators is that all they need is to be placed near an electric socket to work, making them perfect for the less accessible rooms that aren’t already plumbed in, such as your garden office.

Underfloor heating

Underfloor heating is a great idea if your garden office is well insulated, but there are a number of things you need to consider before installing it. A garden room is likely to have a wood floor which will not necessarily be compatible with underfloor heating. It is likely that you’ll need additional insulation to protect the wooden floor from the heat generated.

Heating/cooling radiators

While a garden office needs heat for the majority of the year, there are times of the year when you need completely the opposite. The UK is experiencing more heatwaves than before for which the country is usually unprepared. But there’s a new range of heating/cooling radiators on the market that will provide you with hot air when you need to keep warm, and cold air when you need to keep cool.

Standalone heaters

While standalone heaters – convector heaters, electric oil-filled heaters, or bottled gas heaters – are cheaper to buy, they are expensive to run which makes them a less desirable option than radiators or trench heaters. Modern electric heaters usually have timers and some have Wi-Fi controls which means you can use them to heat up the office before you start work, and makes them more controllable so you can keep an eye on usage.

We hope this gives you enough information to make an informed decision about how you want to heat your garden office. If you are interested in finding out more about trench grilles for your new or existing trench heating system, please feel free to contact us.
